War is a painstakingly planned activity. Missile and aircraft design and production can take years. Officers attend military academies. Highly trained technicians carry out logistics. There is little performed on impulse or anger. General Eisenhower and SHAEF headquarters spent six months preparing Operation Overlord. More than 175,000 troops did not land on the Normandy beaches because Winston Churchill gave a rousing speech in London on June 5, 1944.
Many still feel that war is inherent in the human condition. War is a learned social activity. For centuries, child sacrifice, wife beating, gladiator contests and slavery were normal activities. After a while, they became uncouth, then barbaric and then illegal.
The entire society is complicit in war making activity. Shame on the historians and those who write the textbooks showing war as a normal activity. They show Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Urban II, Christopher Columbus, Napoleon and Bismarck as people who got things done. In fact, they all deserved to be tried in a Nuremberg-type court for war crimes.
